Robert Mondavi Winery ventures in NFT craze featuring 1,966 1.5L porcelain wine bottles

Robert Mondavi Winery has partnered with Bernardaud to join the NFT craze and feature a limited series of 1,966 1.5L porcelain wine bottles.

The launch could be vital for the rest of the wine industry in determining if adopting blockchain technology is beneficial in the future. It could address the issue of authenticity and sustainability.

Bernardaud's porcelain wine bottles

Bernardaud is a notable French luxury porcelain house that dates back to 1863. Michel Bernardaud’s family-owned brand produces porcelain bottles for the collection.

As for the process, 50 specialized craftsmen take two weeks to create each unique bottle with a QR code attached. Bernardaud told Forbes, “We are always trying to incorporate new innovations, such as 3D printing to improve the nature of shapes we can do.”

Several may question the fragility of porcelain for the wine bottles. But Bernardaud cited, “The facade of the new Dolce & Gabbana flagship store in Paris is covered with or porcelain. That should answer any questions about its strength.”

Since the porcelain bottle allows no light in and less temperature variation, Mondavi decides to also store the wines in the glass for 30 years. To assess how the wine ages in porcelain, the company will open a pair every three years.

Robert Mondavi Winery x Bernardaud NFT collection

The Robert Mondavi Winery x Bernardaud NFT collection is titled MCMLXV. It is the translation of 1966, the foundation year of Mondavi. It includes three exclusive wines in 1,966 magnum-size porcelain bottles and lasts for 30-40 years.

Clay Heaton, a generative artist, will create 1,966 original works at the moment of purchase. The special-edition digital art collection is inspired by porcelain bottles and wine blends.

Each unique generative art piece acts as a key to unlock redemption of the wine bottles. It will also provide an exclusive winery experience at the winery’s home vineyard and insider access to Mondavi’s future offerings.

The price of each bottle is $3,500. The Robert Mondavi Winery x Bernardaud NFT collection will be available for purchase with USD or ether (ETH) cryptocurrency, starting December 15, 2021.
